The Engineering Process

A set of steps engineers follow to solve a challenge is called an engineering process. It is highly iterative and certain steps of the process could be repeated multiple times within one project. The specific framing, articulation and frame of the steps that get repeated will differ.

Research is the first step. This involves identifying needs as well as locating information and understanding constraints. It is a crucial part of the engineering design process, as it allows engineers to determine the best solution to an issue.

Once the researchers have gathered enough data and have begun brainstorming solutions to the issue. This can be done in a variety of ways, and is where engineering creativity really thrives. This is also a stage where the potential solutions are examined and evaluated. This could include simulation studies, generating decision matrixes, or even creating prototypes for comparison.

This is the process of students selecting the most appealing idea and then putting together the plan of its creation. The students build the prototype using the materials provided and test it to ensure it meets their performance criteria. Students may need to test and revise their design to ensure that it works according to the specifications.

This is a great method to teach the importance of problem solving and iteration. It is common for engineers to come up with a solution, test it and then come up with the next problem they have to solve. The process continues until the engineer can come up with an answer that matches their expectations.
